I actually did something like this once! Had an employee whp was SO mad at me for something! After nearly a full day of her grumping around at work, I stood next to her as she sat on the floor working on a shelf. She looked up and asked, "WHAT?" very curtly. I leaned in and hugged her, totally diffusing the situation and then we were able to talk through it.
Of course this was several years ago. These days I'd be fired immediately for the hug and she'd have my job!
